How to: Black Opal Nails for Carnival [tutorial]

Buongiorno gentili donzelle!
Questo è il mio secondo tutorial, reputatevi fortunate che in genere io realizzi le nail art di sera o comunque con pessime condizioni di luce, altrimenti ne farei molti di più!
Comunque, ecco come ho fatto le mie unghie carnevalesche, le Black Opal Nails.
In genere le mie nail art non richiedono grosse capacità artistiche o particolare talento (di cui io non sono dotata); questa non fa eccezione, ma vi avviso che sono necessari precisione e tempo (circa 45 minuti). Pronte? Via!


Good morning amazing ladies!
This is my second tutorial, I'd do more but I usually create my nail arts in the evening or on rainy days, so it's almost impossible to take good pics with such light conditions.
Anyway, I'm going to show you how I did my carnival nail art or Black Opal Nails.
In general, my nail arts don't require big artistic skills (maybe because I don't have any artistic skill), and this one is not an exeption. But if you want to create it, you have to be accurate and precise and you need a bit of time (about 45 mins). Ready? Go!

1. Stendete la base nera (nel mio caso l'Orly Liquid Vinyl) e lasciate asciugare bene. Scegliete poi cinque smalti glitter con base trasparente (o comunque mooolto sheer) e armatevi di bastoncino di legno d'arancio. Io ho scelto 5 smalti della Orly Flash Glam FX, ma ripeto: voi selezionate i vostri preferiti, purché abbiano base trasparente o quasi e abbiano glitter abbastanza fitti.
2. Shakerate bene il vostro smalto e iniziate ad applicarlo, dandogli la forma geometrica preferita.
3. Per far sì che sul pennello si accumuli una buona quantità di glitter, necessaria per aver una buona coprenza senza formare un malloppo impressionante di smalto, andate a "ravanare" per bene il pennello sul fondo (dove in genere è raccolta una maggiore quantità di glitter) e scaricate bene il lato posteriore del pennello stesso sull'imboccatura della boccetta. Questo farà sì che in punta rimanga una buona quantità di particelle glitterose ma, al contempo, meno base trasparente possibile. Se non vi sentite abbastanza sicure da procedere direttamente col pennello dello smalto, piazzate su una superficie plasticosa un po' di smalto e prelevatelo con un pennello da nail art (uno zero andrà benissimo) ed utilizzate quello per creare le vostre forme geometriche.
4. Se vi dovesse scappare la mano, ricollocate al loro posto i glitter con l'aiuto di un bastoncino di legno d'arancio.
5. Continuate ad applicare i vostri smalti, variando le forme e l'ordine degli stessi mano a mano che decorate ogni singola unghia.
6. Applicate un top coat fast drying (qui ho usato il Seche Vite) e godetevi il risultato del vostro lavoro!


1. Apply your black base (Orly Liquid Vinyl in my pics) and let dry. Then pick five glitter nail polishes: here I used Orly Flash Glam FX glitters, but you can choose whatever you prefer. I recommend glitters in a clear (or extremely sheer) base. Then, you will also need a wood stick.
2. Shake well your glitter polish and apply it directly on your nail, creating the shape you prefer.
3. Obtaining a good coverage while using a glitter polish in a clear base can be difficult: if you apply too much product you will have a mass of polish that will never dry. So, it's important to collect with your brush as many glitter particles as possible and as less clear base as possible. First-of-all, dip your brush until the bottom of the bottle; then wipe one side of the brush against the bottle rim to get rid of any excess amount of clear base.  Now dab the brush on an area of  your nail to create your preferred shape. Repeat for each shape on the rest of your nail. Another good method, expecially if you don't feel confortable in using the brush of the polish to create the shapes, is placing a generous amount of polish on a plastic surface and then collect the quantity you need with a nail art brush (a #0 brush would be great).
4. If you do a mistake, simply use a wood stick to replace the "wild" glitter particles.
5. Apply all your five polishes, and be sure to have fun! You can change their orders and their shapes while decorating the different nails.
6. Apply a fast drying top coat (here I used Seche Vite) and you're done!

My new dress!

Ce l'ho fatta!!!!
Dopo due mesi, innumerevoli tentativi, miserandi fallimenti ed una decina di guide "HTML per impediti ma testardi" accuratamente consultate, la nuova veste grafica è pronta!
Vorrei ancora riorganizzare la page list, ma son quasi le 2 di notte (anche se programmerò il post per domattina) e io mi son giocata gli ultimi neuroni terminando la personalizzazione del widget "follow me on".
A tal proposito, un altro dubbio che mi porto dietro da un po' è se trasformare il mio profilo Facebook in una pagina vera e propria. E se non sia il caso di iniziare ad usare Instagram e Pinterest.
In ogni caso, non divaghiamo troppo e back to us: lo stacco cromatico dal template precedente all'attuale è notevole. Inizialmente mi sono anche chiesta se non fosse il caso di mettermi gli occhiali da sole. Ma in fondo mi rispecchia: non sono certo una persona dalle mezze misure, anzi, amo gli eccessi. In questo caso l'eccesso di cambiamento cromatico.
Prima la mia attività neuronale si spenga definitivamente (e dato che devo ancora scrivere la versione inglese del post, non mi sembra il caso di lasciarla ulteriormente affievolire), vorrei ringraziare un po' di gente: innanzitutto mia sorella, grazie alla quale questo blog ha finalmente un header degno di questo nome, e che vi assicuro ha dovuto smazzare mica poco per farmi contenta.
Poi Roberta e Alice per i consigli cromatici e non solo. Il gruppo di smaltare anonime che ha avuto l'apparato riproduttivo smerigliato ha seguito passo passo l'evoluzione dei lavori. Ultimi ma non per importanza, i miei amici Colin e Maxi, veri esperti di web design, che hanno sfidato l'eruzione cutanea che in genere attacca gli uomini che si trovano di fronte al mio blog e che mi hanno chiarito un paio di cosette "tecniche" su cui stavo letteralmente impazzendo e cui mai sarei arrivata senza i loro suggerimenti (magari prima o poi mi spiegheranno anche perché non c'è una guida che spieghi in modo umano come minchia diamine funzionino i feedburner id e url, ma non preoccupatevi: arriverò anche a questo).

Finally, I did it! The new dress of my blog is ready! I can't believe it's on line... This may sounds incredible, but it took two months before I was satisfied with the final results.
I picked an "external" template, not one of those proposed by Blogger, and everything was more difficult. I know only a bit of HTML, and every customization required a different HTML code, etc. etc.
Sometimes it became a nightmare!!!
I still want to change something, i.e. I'd like to reorganize my pagelist. But it's 2 am here in Italy (even if I will publish this post tomorrow morning) and I don't think I have the strenght to do it now. Moreover, I also think that I should start to use Instagram or Pinterest (I subscribed to both but have never used them). Or, again, I'd like to create a Facebook page instead of a "fake" personal profile.
Anyway. In terms of color, it's a huge change. From total black to a "bright" white and light blue.
This reflects my personality, I am one of these people who see everything in black or white and I'm extreme in everything.
Before going to bed, I would like to thank a few people. First-of-all my sister, who made me a beautiful gift: a true header for my blog. She worked very hard and I'm very grateful for all that she did.
Then, Roberta and Alice, who gave me precious tips. The fabulous ladies of my Facebook group, who checked everything step by step. Last but not least, my good friends Colin and Maxi, true experts of web design, who helped me with the customization in HTML.

The Rainbow Ladies #3: YELLOW [H&M Going Bananas]

Questo post avrebbe dovuto intitolarsi "Lo strano caso dell'H&M Going Bananas". E dire che avevo aspettative così elevate...
Innanzitutto, adoro il suo nome: evoca nella mia mente malata e perversa un numero imprecisato di banane che rimbalzano a destra e a manca. Insomma, banane bananeggianti (???).
Sìsì, lo so che "going bananas" è un'espressione idiomatica che vuol dire "incazzarsi", ma per me è così. Chevvedevodì. Io ve l'ho sempre scritto che non sto tanto a posto con la testa.
Poi, il colore: un bel giallo pastello pieno di microshimmerini multicolor, evidenti sia in boccetta che durante l'applicazione... Meraviglia. Peccato che, a smalto asciutto, risulti un mero giallo creme. Per vedere lo shimmerino dovete essere sotto la luce artificiale e appiccicare il naso alle unghie.
L'applicazione è ottima e i tempi di asciugatura super rapidi, e nulla da eccepire neppure sulla coprenza: due mani e via.
Il problema sta altrove. Dopo aver messo il top coat, ho notato che lo smalto si è come accartocciato e sollevato ai bordi, rendendoli completamente irregolari, come se fosse stato steso in preda ad una crisi di delirium tremens. Guardate che schifezza soprattutto sul medio. Invece, fidatevi: l'ho steso in maniera eccelsa, super precisa. L'accoppiata base-top coat è la mia solita da mesi (Orly Tough Cookie e Essence Better Than Gel Nails) e non mi ha mai dato problemi, anzi, è una delle migliori mai provate.
Giorno 3: lo smalto a iniziato a creparsi e saltare in piccoli punti.
Ragazze, non ci siamo affatto! Gli darò sicuramente una seconda possibilità per vedere se semplicemente non va d'accordo con la mia base o il top coat, ma per ora è NO. Vorrei sapere da chi lo ha se ha avuto problemi simili, quindi aspetto con ansia un vostro commento a riguardo!
Sono delusissima, avrei voluto farci di tutto con questo colore come base: gradient, applicazione di glitter a cascata, stamping, nail art... E invece, buh.
A presto con smalti che invece non mi han fatto mettere su il broncio, vi abbraccio e vi ricordo che qui sotto ci sono un sacco di post fighi da leggere!


Hi ladies!
Today I'm going to show you a weird nail polish, H&M Going Bananas. I had very high expectations for this baby, but I was extremely disappointed by it.
First-of-all: its name is sooo funny! I don't know why, but it makes me think at a lot of bananas which dance and hop all around... I know, "going bananas" means "to be extremely angry", but I can't get out of my head the image of dancing bananas when I read this idiomatic expression.
(I wrote since my first post that I'm a crazy lady, you were warned!)
About the color: in the bottle it looks like a pastel yellow with lots of multicolor micro shimmer. This shimmer is also visible during application, but it completely disappears once the polish has dried. It is barely visible under artificial light.
Application is good and drying time is really fast; nothing to complain about coverage too, two coats and you're ready to go.
The issue is: after applying my usual top coat, I noticed that there was a sort of shrinkage at the base of my nails. Can you see it? Expecially on the middle finger... What a disaster!
It seems that the polish has been badly applied, but it wasn't: the borders near my cuticles were neat and nice before the application of top coat. I've been using the same base coat (Orly Tough Cookie) and the same top coat (Essence Better Than Gel Nails) since months, and I've never had this kind of problem. On the contrary, this combo is just perfect.
Moreover, on day 3 I noticed some cracks and chipping on the polish.
Ok: Houston, we have a problem. Of course I will try to use again this polish, changing base and top coat, but for the moment I'm extremely disappointed.
I wanted to use Going Bananas for gradients, funny application of glitters, stamping but... I don't think I will use it again soon.
Anyway: if you have this nail polish, please tell me your experience in the comments. I will appreciate a lot any suggestion!

ABC Challenge: D for Diamond Cosmetics Starshine

My choice for letter D of my previous (italian only) ABC Challenge was Diamond Cosmetics Cherry Tobacco. As I wrote in that post, I don't know why I have waited for so long before showing a polish by this brand, I love them! They are cheap, they have a very good quality and some of their shades are beautiful and unique.
Anyway, the polish of the day is Starshine, a deep and dark blue with lighter blue and green shimmer. Two coats in my pics, formula and application were just perfect, it dries fast and has a good longevity too.
I love this polish, quality is really high and the color is simply stunning!

Ci volevano le due ABC Challenge per convincermi a tirar fuori i Diamond Cosmetics! Perché? Non saprei. Come ho già scritto quando vi ho mostrato il Cherry Tobacco, amo moltissimo questo brand e mi spiace sia poco considerato, almeno in Italia.
Comunque sia, ecco a voi Starshine, un bel blu scuro dallo shimmer blu chiaro e verde. Coprente in due passate, formula perfetta, asciuga rapidamente e ha una buona durata.
Insomma, uno smalto davvero di qualità, che posso solamente elogiare e che va più ammirato che chiacchierato.

Orly Liquid Vinyl

Salve a tutte!
Inizio di settimana rovente, ieri ho lavorato fino a mezzanotte, stasera idem, dunque oggi vi scodello uno smalto per cui non c'è bisogno di troppe cerimonie dato che è sul mercato da quasi 4 anni, periodo in cui si è fatto largamente apprezzare dalle polish addicted.
L'Orly Liquid Vinyl è stato infatto lanciato nel 2009, per poi essere riproposto alla fine del 2012 in concomitanza con l'uscita della Flash Glam FX, collezione dedicata al tripudio di glitter in tutte le salse (qui per vedere in azione sia il Liquid Vinyl che i glitter della Flash Glam FX nella mia nail art carnevalesca). Essendo un nero creme superlucido, rappresenta infatti la base perfetta per fare risaltare glitter e topper in tutta la loro bellezza.
Pigmentazione eccellente (due mani supersottili nelle foto), ottima formulazione e tempi di asciugatura molto rapidi. Promosso a pieni voti anche per quanto riguarda la durata, nonostante tutto il marasma che ci ho combinato sopra ha tenuto quasi una settimana.
Sono riuscita a contenere le chiacchiere, mangio un budello e torno a lavoro... A voi, invece, auguro una buona giornata ma, soprattutto, un'ottima serata di riposo e relax!

The beginning of this week is quite delirious for me, yesterday I worked till midnight and same thing this evening, so I decided to write about a very famous nail polish which doesn't need many words or description because I'm too tired for a complicated product!!!
Orly Liquid Vinyl is an old friend of polishaholics, in fact it was launched in 2009, but it has been recently repromoted as the perfect base for the new nail polishes from Orly Flash Glam FX (if you want to see the Carnival nail art I realized with Liquid Vinyl and a few Flash Glam glitters click here!). 
Liquid Vinyl is a black creme which dries super glossy. It has an excellent pigmentation (two thin coats in my pics), an amazing formula and it dries fast too.
I was satisfied  with its longevity too (it lasted almost one week on my nails).

The Rainbow Ladies #2: ORANGE [Basic Beauty #49]

Una quantità spropositata di smalti negli Helmer e rendersi conto che di arancio puri ne hai pochi, e quasi esclusivamente neon. Che con mezzo metro di neve fuori casa e un freddo porco non sono proprio invitanti.
Alla fine è spuntato lui, il Basic Beauty #49, che cade doppiamente a fagiolo perché attualmente c'è un'offerta su questo brand, 3 smalti per 4.99€ nelle profumerie Limoni. Andate e peccate anche per me, signore mie, ché io sono in no buy policy.
Il BB #49 è un bell'arancio vivo, ma non neon, dal fantastico shimmer tono su tono e fuchsia. Due mani abbondanti per la coprenza delle foto, applicazione e formula perfette.
I tempi di asciugatura non sono proprio rapidi, per cui consiglio un fast drying top coat.
A me è piaciuto tantissimo, spero che sia lo stesso per voi, e come sempre: date un'occhiata a cosa hanno combinato le altre pulzelle!


I have around 600 polishes in my stash, but only a few oranges. Moreover, the majority of them has a neon finish. I love neons, but here in North Italy it's super cold and there's snow everywhere, so I'm not in the right mood for a neon orange.
Luckily, I found this beauty in my untrieds box. Basic Beauty #49 is a super bright orange with orange and pink shimmers. 
Application was really pleasant, its formula it's perfect. Two generous coats in my pics.
It dries a bit slowly, so I'd suggest to use a fast drying top coat.
I really like this shade, even if I had almost forgotten I had it. As I wrote several times, Basic Beauty is a cheap Italian brand which can be found in Limoni and La Gardenia stores; their nail polishes are actually on sale (4.99€ for 3 nail polishes), so if you're in Italy for any reason or you have a nailpal in Italy, I'd suggest to take a look at their color range.

ABC Challenge: C for China Glaze Light as Air

Ops, I did it again.
Ebbene sì, sono ricaduta nel tunnel della ABC Challenge. Leggermente in ritardo e con una deriva completamente internazionale, però. Spero sia una buona occasione, per voi, di scoprire ottimi blog oltreoceanici.
Ringrazio al volo Kimber, l'organizzatrice, e la solita Simona, che non mi (ci) tenta solamente con gli swatches ma anche con divertenti iniziative di questo genere, oltre a tutte le altre partecipanti che mi hanno accolta con entusiasmo nonostante il ritardo.
Detto questo, parto con uno smalto non recente, ma che io continuo ad utilizzare gioiosamente da quasi 3 anni: Light as Air di China Glaze.
Si tratta di uno smalto di un lilla chiarissimo e dal finish creme, che si applica divinamente a dir poco. Quasi si scioglie sulle unghie. Fantastico. Due passate per la coprenza perfetta, asciugatura rapida e durata infinita.
Lo trovo perfetto per delle gradient, come base stamping, come base per applicare decals floreali od ancora one stroke o nail arts in generale (infatti io l'ho usato per la mia striped manicure). Delicato, elegante e multiuso. Si può chiedere di più ad uno smalto? Ne dubito.

Ops, I did it again.
Another ABC Challenge for me. Yes, I'm a bit late, I know. But I'm ready for the party!
I love the fact that this challenge is international, I've already discovered a couple of wonderful new blogs and I also think that my Italian lovely readers could do the same.
Anyway, I'd like to thank again Kimber who kindly accepted my tardive participation, and Simona who suggested me to join. Also, a huge thank you to the lovely ladies/challengers who warmly greet me.
Well, let's talk about the polish of the day! I picked an old shade, China Glaze Light as Air. 
Let me say that this polish is incredible. I love it, I think it's a timeless color.
Light as Air is a very pale lilac creme polish. Formula is great, application is super easy, it seems it's melting on your nails. 
Two coats for the perfect coverage. Longevity is really, really high.
I think it's beautiful if worn alone, but it's also the perfect base for layering, stamping, gradients, one strokes or nail arts in general (I used it as a base for my first striped manicure).
It's classy, elegant and multipurpose too! I couldn't expect more from a nail polish!
