My INCI polishes database

Grazie a tutte voi che state leggendo e buona serata/weekend/quellochevvepare!

As you probably noticed, I added a new page under my header: it's my personal INCI polishes database (or maybe it's only a guide).
As I wrote on the top of that page, I got those info from my personal collection, and I don't own all brands in the world or every single collection of the brands included, so if you want to add some info feel free to write me an email, I will be very happy to update it ASAP!
So, I have to go now, I have to write a programmed post: tomorrow I will be at the wedding of two good friends of mine and I won't be able to update the blog. I know they use to read my blog, I'm sure they aren't reading it now but I want to say it anyway: congratulations A. and F.!
Thank YOU for reading and commenting and have a nice evening/weekend/whatever!

Missha HGR01

When it comes to nail polishes, korean brands rock! As you probably know, I'm in love with Nfu Oh, a brand of the highest level, and now my heart is beating also for Missha, which I discovered thanks to Aly and Nathalie.
I own only one polish by Missha (for now!) and it is HGR01. I'm mad about it!
First of all, look at that color: it is a duochrome green with crazy gold and turquoise reflections. It has a finish very similar to foil.
When promotional photos of Chanel Péridot came out, someone hypothesized that this Missha could be a dupe: now that we have seen Péridot in a lot of photos, we can say that Missha is not a dupe, and I think it is definitely better!

Its brush has an uncommon shape: it is really wide but application is easy, maybe because it is also very flat.
The coverage you see in the pictures was obtained with two coats. I didn't use top coat but my manicure has dried very quickly, and lasted for five days.
As a final note, it's a scented polish! If you don't like this kind of product, don't worry: the rose scent is not strong at all.
In short, I am really, really crazy for this nail polish and I'd like to try some other Missha product but I will expect to see more swatches on the net before starting to purchase.
I hope you enjoyed it too and thanks for reading!

MAC Blankety and MAC Creme Cup

Sò sacrifici, lo so!

Blankety on the left - Creme Cup on the right

Blankety in the shade

Creme Cup in the shade

Despite being a compulsive buyer when it comes to makeup, my collection of lipsticks is incredibly low. If you see it and nothing more, I could even be considered a normal person.
Until three years ago, in fact, I used to wear lip glosses, lipstick, and I had only one lipstick in my stash (a spectacular red by the italian brand Deborah). Since then, I have changed my mind and now I hardly wear a lip gloss so I inevitably had to increase my lipstick collection (I certainly cannot wear a fire red every day...).

Today I'm going to show you two famous products by MAC, Blankety and Cream Cup.
I must admit I bought MAC Blankety because I saw it so many times on make up tutorials by the italian You Tube Guru Giuliana (aka Makeupdelight2009), and I liked it a lot.
When I tried it in a MAC Store it seemed it could look great on me too... ERROR!
Honestly, it is not exactly my colour. I am a NW20, I have dark blond hair with a touch of red, dark green eyes and lips with average pigmentation. When I wear it, it seems that my colours emphasize the beige of Blankety (I think you have noticed it by the pictures) and my skin looks dull when I wear it.
However, I committed an error of assessment for the colour, but that does not affect my opinion on this lipstick. It is simply spectacular!
It is classic beige nude with a touch of pink, and it is highly pigmented, as indeed all the lipsticks in the category of Amplified Creme, judging from the reviews I read. The texture is fantastic, it's soooo creamy!
Longevity is really high and, in the end, it has a pleasant, light scent of vanilla.
In short, I won't buy Blankety again because it isn't my colour, although I'm still using it a lot, in combination with a veil of light pink lipgloss by ELF. But if this colour looks good on you, you should give it a chance, because it is a valuable product!

MAC Creme Cup is definitely MY colour! I think I will buy it for ever! It is my every day lipstick and I'm really in love with it.
Creme Cup belongs to Cremesheen "family" and is slightly less pigmented than Blankety, but still allows you to get a nice result in a couple of coats. It is a delicate and bright pink with light blue undertones and has a creamy and smooth texture.
Longevity is slightly less than the Blankety one, but still pretty good.
Creme Cup has a nice smell of vanilla too, and both lipsticks have a highly moisturizing formula.

To conclude: there are two very valuable products, but italian price is a bit high (approx. € 16.50). Anyway, I highly recommend both!
Thanks for reading and see you soon (with a nail polish!).

An insight into Big3Free and Big4Free

I have to thank my fiancé for this post. I have always been a newbie in chemistry, even during high school. On the contrary he got a degree in Chemistry and actually he works as a safety expert for chemical risk.
I've read a lot of articles containing information of "convenience" about Big3Free or Big4Free so I decided to write a small analysis of the issue.
What lies beyond the name of Big3Free?
Three substances: formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phtalate (DBP). If you're reading about Big4Free, add to this list also formaldehyde resin.

Formaldehyde is a substance that, as natural and pure, is in gaseous form. In recent years its use has steadily declined in the industry of nail polishes, but is still present, especially in hardener/strenghten products. Its purpose, in fact, is to make the nail polish (and nails) more resistant. Its danger is related to its carcinogenicity.
Formaldehyde is very volatile and is easily assimilated by our body (by inhalation and ingestion... But I doubt that any of you usually drink polish!).

Clearly, the risk that can result from the use of nail polishes containing formaldehyde is related to the amount of formaldehyde contained therein. The amount of substance that is released during the application of nail polish is certainly very limited. Obviously, in order to make more precise inferences it would be necessary to have some data, such as quantity, environment of use, frequency of use, time of use and subjective sensitivity.

On formaldehyde resin we can say similar things. This resin is nothing but a derivative of formaldehyde, but it restricts the release of this substance. That is, less formaldehyde is used and there are lower losses. So, following on the above, the use of the resin is safer but not entirely free from risk (quantity and chance to absorb formaldehyde decrease).

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is the most bastard of the list! The European Union has banned its use from  cosmetic industry with the Directive 76/768/EEC in 1976 and since 2006 also US listed it as a potential teratogenic (ie, it causes malformations in fetuses). Since then, more and more American cosmetic industries are abolishing its use. If you come from a country of the European Union, I do not recommend, therefore, to import foreign polishes containing DBP: commercialization and importing these products is forbidden!
DBP is a plasticizer and is used to prevent the formation of cracks in the polish.

Toluene: it is a solvent and helps to keep the polish fluid. A little curiosity: it was used by the German chemist Wilbrand to get the first formulation of TNT: this acronym in fact means trinitrotoluene.
It is an harmful substance by inhalation, it is highly flammable and toxic to aquatic organisms as well! So, do not leave your nail polishes containing toluene open, because if you reach the right stoichiometric proportion, and you add a spark, you will get a nice boooooom!
Seriously, toluene is harmful to the kidneys and nervous system.

Additional Information: camphor. It is an harmful substance if swallowed, so please do not spread your nail polishes with camphor on the bread instead of Nutella. It is dangerous even by contact with the skin if it is in its pure form.

In conclusion: of course, the above ingredients are potentially harmful for health. My advice is to avoid them as much as possible. Quantities used and manipulated by us, nail polish addicted, are so small that, in themselves, are not sufficient to cause damage.
However, you have to carefully consider the parameter of subjective sensitivity: if you are hypersensitive to these substances, the quantitative limits drop significantly, so the best choice is to avoid these ingredients altogether.

During the writing of this post, we consulted the safety sheets of the substances from NIOSH website.

Promosso a pieni voti!

The magnet!

As promised, here I am with Layla Magnetic Polish in Changing Lilac!
Layla is an Italian brand that chose its Magnetic Collection to enter the American market. At first I wasn't attracted by this collection, because I tried Essence Magnetic Polishes in the past and I wasn't happy with them. The magnetic effect wasn't so strong and you have to wait too long with the magnet near every, single nail. *ronf*
But when I saw the first swatches of Layla polishes on the web, I decided to buy Changing Lilac. Layla promises that you will see the formation of the magnetic effect after only 5 seconds, and it's true! But, in my swatches, you will see the result after 8-10 seconds of "magnet action"!

How to use magnetic polishes? First of all, you have to paint one nail at a time. Apply a very generous coat of polish, then put the magnet as close as possible to your nail. Wait 5 seconds or more, et voilà! Done! Repeat with all other nails.
About the brush: when I saw it, I was scared. It's soooo fat! In my experience, fat brush plus thick texture = disaster and a lot of time for clean up!
I was wrong: the fat brush let you apply the polish in a very short time as required, but accurately.
Drying time is really fast and longevity is really good too (four days before minor tip wears and five days before minor chipping).
IMPORTANT: do NOT apply a top coat! Expecially fast drying TC! You will loose the intensity of the colour and you will decrease the magnetic effect too.
In conclusion, I LOVE this polish and I highly recommend it!

POLEMIC NOTE: Layla Magnetic polishes retail for €9.90 in Italy and $15.50 in US. The rise of the price is really low and it is fully justified by shipping and customs costs. Then, why american salon brands are so expensive here in Italy? We experience rises from 200% to 500%. WHY?
Ok, everybody knows that Italian tax burden is one of the highest in the world, but that could justify rises of 20-30%, not 500%!

Nailphilia: when art and nail worlds collide

This is my favourite oeuvre!

I wanted to show you a Layla Magnetic polish today, I took these photos two weeks ago. But I forgot my camera (and its SD Card) at office, and I haven't transferred photos on my laptop yet.
I'm really sorry, but I promise that I will show it tomorrow!
So I have another topic for you today: the nail art exhibition called Nailphilia. Nail polishes are an important part of fashion nowadays, and nails are accessories. Nails are a new palette on which you can spill your own inspirations and creativity.
For these reasons, artists from DegreeArt.com decided to combine art world and nail world. They established precious collaborations with famous nail technicians, fashion artists and nail jewelry specialists. Between them, also artists from NYC's Laruicci, who created Beyonce's gold claws for her video of "Run the World".
I took some photos from La Repubblica website, please click on the link if you want to see the full gallery. Otherwise, please click here for any other info!

Essence Gel Eyeliner VS MAC Fluidline

Buongiorno / buonasera a tutte!

MAC VS Essence

MAC VS Essence

Essence on the left - MAC on the right

MAC Blitz & Glitz, in the shade

Essence Midnight in Paris, in the shade

Hello readers!
In this post I will compare two excellent products, MAC Fluidline in Blitz & Glitz and Essence Gel Eyeliner in Midnight in Paris. Unfortunately I do not own MAC Blacktrack in this moment (I finished it months ago), but the primary interest of this post is comparing performances and not colour, so let's go!

MAC Fluidline in Blitz & Glitz is a dark gold enriched with gold microglitter (not so visible) and dries very matte. It has a soft texture and it blends very well so it can be used for smokey looks. It is very pigmented and has a high longevity: it doesn't smudge despite super hot weather. It can be removed easily and it won't need waterproof cleanser.
This is really a wonderful product, infact it is a strong point of the Canadian cosmetics giant, and I can only complain about the price: approx. 18€ here in Italy.

Essence Gel Eyeliner in Midnight in Paris was a revelation. It's black, black, very black and it dries glossy. A lot more glossy than Blitz & Glitz, but is has nothing to envy to Blacktrack. Its texture is super soft, so pay attention when you apply it: if you use too much product (as I did the first times, with my hand fairy!) it could smudge near your tear duct.
If applied with care, it can last hours and hours on your lid. Removal was easy, too.
Price? In Italy 3.99€ for 3ml.

As you can see in the pictures, Essence Gel Eyeliner "cracked" six months after opening, and this hasn't happened with MAC Fluidline yet (opened 10 months ago). However, this is only an aesthetic matter, because nothing changed in terms of texture or performances.

In conclusion: I am a MAC fanatic, I love their products but I definitely recommend Essence in this case. The differences between the two items is so infinitesimal that it can be considered negligible.
If sometimes you can save pennies, why not?

OPI Suzi says Feng Shui featuring Nfu Oh #53

Another post with a stunning Nfu Oh polish from the Opal Series!
This is Nfu Oh #53, which has a light blue and quite sheer base. Lots of green, turquoise and pink flakies are drowned in this base.
In my opinion, Nfu Oh #53 can be used even alone (maybe three coats required?), but in my photos you will see a layering: two coats over OPI Suzi Says Feng Shui, a creme dusty blue.
As it brother #44, it dries lightning fast, it embellishes even the most boring of your creme polishes, extends the longevity of your coloured base and offers a lot of possible combos.
What do you think of Nfu Oh flakies? Are you a fan of them or not?
Thank you for reading and commenting!

ps. of course, I will swatch Suzi Says Feng Shui on its own... I have so many things to show you, I only need more time! :)
